More Craps Bets

Craps offers a variety of different bets. These include pass line, don't pass, odds bets, come bets and don't come bets. It also offers some other bets called place number bets, proposition bets and big six/eight bets. These secondary bets are not recommended for gamblers that want to win as the casinos have a large advantage with these three bets. Below I will explain how these bets work and show you why it's best to avoid these bets all together.

Place Number Bets

A place number bet is a bet on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. Players win these bets if after the come out roll the shooter rolls one of these numbers before they roll a 7. These bets can only be made ofter the come out roll. Below you will find a chart that will show the odds for the different bets as well as the casinos advantage. Note: The true odds are the real odds that a particular number with hit.

Number Odds Offered True Odds Casino Advantage
4 9-5 2-1 6.67%
5 7-5 3-2 4.00%
6 7-6 6-5 1.52%
8 7-6 6-5 1.52%
9 7-5 3-2 4.00%
10 9-5 2-1 6.67%

As you can see, with the exception of 6 and 8 the casinos advantage is rather large for most of these best. When you take into consideration that the casino is not even paying out at true odds it makes this bet look even worse.

Proposition Bets

In the center of the table you will find a section for proposition bets. A proposition bets is an additional bet that will always win or lose with the next roll. You can see from the image below which proposition bets are available and at what odds the casino is offering them at. These bets should be avoided at all cost as they DO NOT pay out at true odds, these are the craps bets that give the casino an edge.

Big 6 and 8

This bet is also given a section of the table and these bets can be made at any point during a game. The reason for this is that the casino has over a 9% advantage over the player with these bets. To win this bet the shooter will need to throw a 6 or 8 before they roll a 7.

The Field Bet

As with the big 6 and 8 bet the field bet gets a rather large section of the table. This is because the casinos advantage is a whopping 5.5%. You win this bet if the shooter rolls a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 and you lose this bet if they roll a 5, 6, 7, or 8.
