How to Play Roulette

Next to blackjack, roulette is probably the most popular casino table game in the world. The reasons for this are simple, it's a very social and simple game that anyone can play. This makes the game fun for seasoned veterans as well as new gamblers who are just learning the ropes. It's also one of those casino games that tends to get glorified on TV and in many Hollywood movies.

The word roulette is a french word meaning little wheel and was first played in 1796. It took until the 19th century for the game to spread throughout Europe and America.

A roulette table can come in two variations; an American version where the wheel has 36 numbers, a zero and another double zero. The more popular version is the European table with 36 numbers and only one zero. This is because it only has the single zero which significantly lessens the house edge.

Like most casino games the casinos have a slight advantage, that means you can win in the short term and you will lose in the long term. You will not find a single roulette betting system that will give the players an advantage, so only use these systems for entertainment purposes.

Playing a Game

  1. Players will make bets by placing chips on the table. These bets can include color, even/odd, numbered and many other. For a full list please see the roulette bet section.
  2. Once all players have placed bets the croupier(casino employee) will spin the wheel and then spin the ball in the opposite direction.
  3. Right before the ball falls on a number the croupier will call out no more bets and all betting is frozen.
  4. The ball will lose momentum and fall into a numbered hole.
  5. The croupier will then place a dolly on the winning number and collect all losing bets.
  6. The croupier will pay winners and players can place bets for next round.
