What is iDEAL and why every Dutch casino uses it

Can you use iDEAL without a Dutch bank account?

Yes. iDEAL requires an account at a participating bank, not a Dutch passport or even a Dutch IBAN. The list of participating banks includes Revolut (the first non-Dutch bank to join, in 2020), N26 (since 2023), and bunq, alongside the traditional Dutch banks such as ING, ABN AMRO, and Rabobank.

Opening a Dutch bank account

Registering at a Dutch casino as a foreigner

Identity verification itself usually runs through your own bank. Dutch casinos use iDIN, the identity service the banks operate, so if you already hold an account at a participating bank the check takes seconds and you usually upload nothing. It is the same argument as with iDEAL: the bank account you already have is what gets you through the door.

DigiD, the Dutch government login, plays no role in casino registration; you only need it if you ever want to enrol yourself in Cruks voluntarily, and even then you can enrol without DigiD by filling in a form.

Banks that support iDEAL

iDEAL works from an account at any participating bank, and that includes the app-only banks most internationals open first. The table below lists every participating bank with the daily limit it applies by default, which you can usually raise in the banking app.

The daily limit is set by your bank, not by the casino, and it counts every iDEAL payment you make that calendar day, not just deposits.

You can usually raise it in the banking app, although an increase takes a few days to take effect and the ceiling differs per bank: ING and Rabobank go up to €50,000, ABN AMRO to €250,000, and ASN Bank keeps its permanent maximum at €25,000.

Hit the limit and your bank refuses the payment, so all you see in the cashier is a failed attempt. The deposit limit you set with the casino is separate from this and sits far lower in practice.

Not sure whether your bank takes part? The bank list in the casino cashier is always current. Never use an intermediary offering to deposit “on your behalf”: the money then comes from someone else’s account and the casino will refuse it.

Fees and limits

Depositing at casinos with iDEAL costs you nothing. Dutch rules place the transaction fee on the casino’s side and forbid passing it on, so a €50 deposit lands in your balance as exactly €50.

The limits you will run into come from three directions:

• Casino minimums: most casinos take iDEAL deposits from €10. A casino minimum deposit of 5 euro with iDEAL is genuinely available, and four brands in our toplist accept it, so the lower tier is real. Check the cashier before you rely on it, because minimums change. Note that the welcome bonus usually asks for more than the cashier does: across our list the bonus minimum sits between €10 and €25.
• Your bank’s daily limit: every bank caps daily iDEAL payments, and you can usually adjust that cap in your banking app (see the table above). In practice the Dutch deposit limits below bite first, so your bank is rarely what stops you.
• Dutch regulatory limits: setting a deposit limit above €350 a month (€150 if you are under 24) means the casino must contact you first and warn you about the risk ^[5]. Once your net deposits pass €700 a month (€300 for young adults), it must check that you can afford them, and if you cannot show that, or the check never happens, it has to stop accepting deposits for the rest of the month. Setting a deposit limit is not optional in the Netherlands, and every casino requires you to set one at registration, before your first deposit. You can always lower it in your account, but an increase only takes effect after seven days, so you cannot raise it on impulse.

iDEAL is becoming Wero: what changes for you

Wero is the European payment network built by the European Payments Initiative to replace national systems like iDEAL.

Since 29 January 2026, Dutch checkouts show the combined “iDEAL | Wero” brand, and that is all that has changed so far: every transaction is still processed by iDEAL.

So what is a Wero payment in practice? For now, exactly the same thing as an iDEAL payment. You approve it in your own banking app, it arrives instantly, and it costs you nothing.

The timeline to the end of 2027

The migration happens behind the scenes throughout 2026. From the fourth quarter of 2026 the first merchants move onto Wero contracts, and the iDEAL name is expected to disappear at the end of 2027. Until then the payment screen you know keeps working exactly as it does now.

There is no separate consumer Wero app in the Netherlands yet. Germany, Belgium and France already have one, and Belgian customers can activate Wero straight from their own bank’s app, which is the most likely route here too.

Do you need to do anything?

No. There is nothing to install, request or switch over. You keep approving payments the way you already do, and once casinos run fully on Wero the only difference you will notice is a different logo at the checkout. If you already use Wero in one of those countries, note that the Dutch rollout is payments-first: the standalone app follows later.

The identity check is changing on the same pattern. iDIN reports that the itsme app has taken it over and will replace it gradually over the coming years. Again there is nothing to arrange, because the casino decides which service it uses at signup.

Alternatives if you can’t use iDEAL yet

Waiting on a bank account, or does your home bank not participate? You still have licensed options:

• Trustly: pays straight from a bank account, with no separate wallet registration. The difference from iDEAL is reach: iDEAL only works with participating Dutch banks, while Trustly covers most European bank accounts. For players whose home bank sits outside the iDEAL scheme, that makes it the closest substitute.
• Bank transfer: slower for deposits but universally available, and the standard withdrawal route at every casino that supports bank transfer.
• Debit cards: Visa and Mastercard debit cards are widely accepted at Dutch casinos; credit gambling is not permitted, so expect debit only.

Can iDEAL top up an e-wallet? With many services it can, but that does not help you at a Dutch cashier: licensed casinos want the payment to come from an account in your own name and rarely accept e-wallets at all, so deposit with iDEAL directly rather than through a middle step.

How to spot a fake iDEAL payment screen

Fraudsters copy the iDEAL payment screen, so check the beneficiary name in your banking app before you approve a deposit. At a licensed casino you will see the licence holder or a recognised payment provider there, never a private individual. If the name means nothing to you, cancel the payment and look the casino up in the Ksa register first.

Be just as careful with payment requests that reach you outside the cashier, for example through a link in an email or a chat message. A real iDEAL payment always starts in the casino’s own cashier.
