Background of the Online Gambling Proposition

Playing cards, dice and chips on a keyboardThe Corporate Online Gambling Proposition, sponsored by out-of-state online gambling corporations like FanDuel and DraftKings, would legalize online and mobile sports gambling all through the state, turning almost every cell phone, tablet, and laptop into a gambling device. These two brands have a vested interest in moving along legislation in California, as they both already offer legal daily fantasy sports in the state.

Educators, parents, and others are concerned that this deceitful measure will expose children to greater risks of addiction and problem gambling.

According to research by the Journal of Gaming Issues, the rapid speed of play and easy accessibility of mobile and online gambling are especially appealing to young people.

Furthermore, this measure would put schools and public education on the back burner. This is because the measure clearly circumvents Prop. 98’s guaranteed minimum funding to California public schools.

CTA Voted Against Legalizing Online Sports Betting

Last month, the labor organization announced that it would oppose the measure proposed by seven national sportsbooks. These sportsbooks have pledged $100M to advance “Californians for Solutions to Homelessness and Mental Health Support.”

The “Californians for Solutions” measure is the gaming-related initiative that was reviewed by the association’s 600-member State Council of Education.

The CTA’s president, E. Toby Boyd, did not provide a specific statement on why the union opposes the online sports betting measure. He did, however, state that the group would fight for “protecting the integrity of Prop. 98,” an amendment to the constitution passed by state voters in 1998.

The amendment ensures that the state gives a guaranteed amount to community colleges and public schools.

CTA Move Was Expected

A spokesperson for “Californians for Solutions,” Nathan Click, told Casino.org that the CTA’s stance wasn’t surprising to him.

He said, “CTA has a long-standing policy of opposing measures that provide funding outside the Prop. 98 guarantees”. He further stated that the measure was estimated to give significant funding to various social causes and that a number of government leaders backed it.

Libby Schaaf (Oakland Mayor), Jerry Dyer (Fresno Mayor), and Darrell Steinberg (Sacramento Mayor) are among the leaders who have expressed support for the online sports betting measure.

California tribal leaders have spoken out against the online measure. They have also received backing from some organizations and groups.

Updates on the California Sports Betting

California’s insatiable desire for legal sports betting has resulted in a flurry of recent proposals to legalize sports betting in the state.

The measure to legalize sports betting online as well as in tribal casinos, licensed racing associations, professional sports venues, and other gaming facilities run by the state appears to be headed for the November ballot.

If the measure gains voter approval, online sports betting could be legalized in California as early as 2023. If this happens, the state could become the most lucrative sports betting market in the United States.

About the California Teachers Association (CTA)

The CTA is 310,000 educators across the state of California. The association is a passionate and powerful advocate for public education and students.

The CTA members include counselors, teachers, librarians, psychologists, educational support professionals, higher education staff and faculty, school nurses, retired educators, and students who are preparing to join the profession.

For more than 150 years, the CTA has been at the forefront of the labor movement, fighting for the rights of educators and every public-school kid to receive a high-quality education.
