Pennsylvania’s Record-Breaking March Gambling Revenue

Pennsylvania’s March 2024 gambling profits are up.The state of Pennsylvania has achieved record-breaking figures in terms of monthly gambling revenue for March 2024. The numbers for this month recently became available publicly and show a steady increase in the popularity of gambling, especially iGaming.

Pennsylvania’s total revenue last month was $554.6 million. This represents an increase of 7.6% compared to March 2023. Interestingly, this amount shows an even higher increase from the previous month, February 2024.

February’s total was only $449.1 million, making the jump in revenue 11.1% more in March 2024. Furthermore, Pennsylvania’s last record was set in December 2023 with a total of $534.2 million. This was also beat in last month’s total.

December vs. March Figures

The December figures are unsurprising given that the holiday season tends to be an extremely profitable time for gaming across the board. Seizing the end-of-year and Christmas momentum, many companies offer special deals and contests during this time. Lotto draws are an especially popular seasonal event and often coincide with big holidays like Christmas and New Year’s.

This does not, however, explain why March 2024 was such a successful month for gambling in Pennsylvania. There are more detailed figures available from the month which show where exactly the money comes from in terms of the various gambling verticals available in the state.

Where Pennsylvania’s Gambling Revenue is Coming From

Pennsylvania is the second richest gaming state with an array of different gaming options to choose from. In general, slot machine revenue has declined due to a decline in available machines. Numbers have reduced by nearly 1,000 machines from February to March. Land-based table game revenue also fell by nearly a percentage point.

Online gambling is by far the biggest money-maker for the industry in Pennsylvania. This is also not surprising, given the popularity of online gaming in all forms across the US, as it becomes more widely legalized and available.

In March 2024, iGaming revenue increased by 29% to an impressive $191.1 million. This is indeed the new monthly record for the vertical in this state.

Online slots specifically increased by 29.3%. Meanwhile, online table games also out-performed land-based table games by far, with a 31.2% increase from the previous month. The one exception to the online trend was online poker, which saw a decrease by 14.4% in March.

Pennsylvania’s Biggest Earners in the Gambling Industry

Pennsylvania has a few major players when it comes to its iGaming industry. At the moment, Hollywood Casino which operates with the Penn National Race Course is at the top of the charts. This company alone brought in over $72 million in iGaming earnings.

Following Hollywood Casino was Valley Forge Casino Resort with $50.8 million in earnings. The third spot goes to Rivers Casino Philadelphia with nearly $33 million in revenue.

Sports Betting Declines

Another noteworthy piece of information from Pennsylvania’s latest revenue stats is the point that sports betting has not done as well as iGaming, and the difference is quite significant. Revenue has decreased by 10% in year-on-year figures. These numbers have also declined in comparison to February 2024.
