Pennsylvania’s remote gaming industry sees 15.4% growth in June
With iGaming, sports betting, and retail gaming being the three main contributing factors to the surging gambling revenue in June, Pennsylvania certainly got closer to many leading US states in the industry. It does not come to just a percent or two, but an increase of over 15%.
Tax revenue breakdown
For June, Pennsylvania’s total tax revenue amounted to $544.7 million. iGaming generated the highest tax contribution in comparison to previous periods, driven by a 32.3% rise, or $212.6 million. Sports betting followed with a 71.4% increase in revenue, reaching $51.2 million, while retail slots and table games contributed $270.8 million and $13 million, respectively. You can see all the numbers in this news post by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB).
The role of iGaming
One of the key drivers behind Pennsylvania’s gambling revenue spike was iGaming, which saw an impressive increase on a year-to-year basis for June. Online slots were the dominant category, bringing in $162.2 million, followed by internet table games at $47.6 million, and online poker contributing $2.7 million. DFS also contributed with less than $1 million in revenue.
Sports betting results
In addition to the growth in iGaming, sports betting revenue in Pennsylvania saw a remarkable 71.4% increase, reaching $51.2 million. A majority of this revenue, $49.2 million, came from online betting. $2 million was generated through retail sportsbooks, mostly from two resorts: Valley Forge Casino Resort and Hollywood Casino at the Meadows. The state’s hold for the month shows strong performance in the sector.
Although a little, fantasy contests also played their role in the surge of taxable gambling revenue in June. DraftKings and FanDuel are the two main players in this sector, contributing $726,852 and $138,761 in revenue, respectively.
Contribution of retail gambling
While the remote gaming sectors showed strong performance, retail gambling in Pennsylvania saw a more modest performance. Like DFS, the numbers are not quite impressive. Retail slot revenue even dipped slightly by 0.9%, totaling $199.3 million, and video gaming terminal revenue at truck stops fell by 2.2%, amounting to $3.4 million. In contrast, table games revenue increased by 1.6%, reaching $77.3 million for the month.
Outlook for the future
The overall growth in iGaming and online sports betting highlights the expanding role of remote gambling in Pennsylvania. While the land-based sector continues to generate significant revenue, it is clear that online gambling is a crucial part of the state’s future gaming landscape. Pennsylvania is poised for even greater revenue gains as the sector continues to grow.
